Baseball comes up empty in 2025 Opener against Houston-Victoria

VICTORIA, Texas - Wiley University baseball player Jhan Carlos Javier reached base in the second inning, but the defending regular season conference champion Wildcats had no answer for the University of Houston-Victoria's pitcher Brady Parker in a 10-0 run-rule loss Friday at Riverside Stadium.

The Wildcats (0-1) dropped their season opener for the third time in the last four seasons. They've been held scoreless in their previous three games since the end of last season. It's the first time Wiley hasn't recorded a hit since January 28, 2022. Javier was the only runner to reach base via a walk. The Wildcats struck out 11 times with six looking. They only hit one ball out of the infield.

Nick Rodriguez, primarily a reliever last season, started on opening day. In 4 2/3 innings, he gave up nine runs on eight hits, walked five and struck out three. After giving up a leadoff single, he retired the next two batters. Hal Perez put the Jaguars on the board with a two-run home run to left-center field. Rodriguez held Houston-Victoria scoreless in the second and fourth innings but allowed two runs in the third and was tagged for five runs in the fifth. Marquis Kuykendall, who got to pitch in his hometown, tossed the last 1 1/3 innings, giving up a run on a hit and two walks.

The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
