Baseball falls at Nelson University

WAXAHACHIE, Texas - The defending regular season conference champion Wiley University baseball team were handed a challenging 17-2 defeat by the Nelson University Lions in a non-conference baseball game Monday at the Lions Athletic Complex.

The loss snaps a three-game winning streak and extends their skid against the Lions to 11 games. It is the second time the Wildcats have lost by double-digits.

Wiley (3-4) opened the scoring, thanks to notable efforts from Ryan Ready, who doubled, and Ivan Del Villar, who followed with a triple. However, the game quickly took a turn as starting pitcher Jalen Porter struggled on the mound, surrendering nine runs on seven hits in just a third of an inning. Despite the setback, Corey Grant provided a highlight for Wiley by striking out the side in the sixth inning. Ethan Jones threw 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. Sammuel Urena and Kadin Resendez also got work.

Jacob Perez and Ryan Ready were the main offensive contributors for Wiley, with both players crossing home plate. Ivan Del Villar contributed significantly with a run batted in (RBI) and two hits alongside Ready. Anthony Castaneda also provided two base knocks. Despite these moments, the Wildcats could not overcome the offensive surge of the Lions.

The team is looking to rebound in their home opening series against Arkansas Baptist College on Friday and Saturday in Marshall. Head coach Kendrick Biggs remains optimistic about refining strategies and performances as the Wildcats continue to prepare for conference play.
