Baseball unable to hold off Texas Wesleyan
FT. WORTH, Texas - The defending Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion Wiley University baseball team took the lead late but could not stop Texas Wesleyan from rallying in the eighth inning of a 7-4 loss Monday in a non-conference game at Sycamore Park.
The loss ends a six-game winning streak for the Wildcats, who fall to 3-5 in road contests. It's their first loss when holding the lead after the sixth inning.
Abel Rodriguez Jr. went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run and a RBI. His double in the seventh gave Wiley a two-run lead. He increased it when he scored on a ground ball by Jacob Perez. Ivan Del Villar went 2-for-4. Adrian Cindo went 1-for-2 and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth on an error by the right fielder. Kai Woodard singled in the seventh and scored on Rodriguez's double.
Jalen Porter made his third start of the season and held a strong Texas Wesleyan lineup to a run on nine hits and struck out nine batters in six innings. Ethan Jones took over in the seventh and preserved the lead. He retired the first two batters in the eighth but walks extended the inning. A passed ball brought home a run and an error allowed the tying run to score. The Rams sent seven batters to the plate before the Wildcats got the third out.
Wiley tried to rally in the ninth. Jaziel Martinez singled and Rodriguez doubled with one out. Strikeouts ended the rally.
The Wildcats will resume Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at Stillman College on Friday and Saturday.
