Baseball rallies late, falls short in opener against LSU-Alexandria
MARSHALL, TEXAS - The defending Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion Wiley University baseball team made an audacious attempt to bounce back in the late innings against Louisiana State University at Alexandria but fell short in 10-8 defeat Friday at Coker Field.
The Wildcats (11-8, 5-1 HBCUAC) drop consecutive home games for the first time since February 24, 2024. They fell behind in the second inning, when Guillory struggled with control with two outs. Three walks and two hit batters set up three runs for the Generals.
Jalen Porter took over in the third inning and did all he could to limit the Generals' powerful lineup striking out 11 batters. Still, LSUA added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. In the seventh inning, two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases and set up the Generals for a four-run inning.
Ivan Del Villar got Wiley on the board with his fifth home run of the season. Jhan Carlos Javier and Smauri Abram continued the rally with base hits. Armand Daigre hit a RBI double and Anthony Castaneda followed with a two-RBI single. Kai Woodard drove in a run with bases loaded walk and Ryan Ready hit an RBI single to cut the margin to four. Wiley batted through its whole lineup before Stillman recorded an out. A run-scoring single by Abram cut the margin to two.
Wiley wasn't able to complete the comeback. Julian Rosales and Ryan Ready singled in the eighth but were stranded when a flyout ended the inning. Abram walked and Castaneda was hit by a pitch in the ninth but a strikeout ended the game. Ready, Javier, Abram, Daigre each had two hits.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader at noon tomorrow.
