Baseball visits Voorhees University in crucial HBCUAC Series

The defending Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion Wiley University baseball team embarks on an 11-game road trip with its first stop at Voorhees University for a three-game Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) series Friday and Saturday in Denmark, South Carolina.

Friday's first pitch is at noon Central Standard Time while Saturday's doubleheader begins at 11 a.m. The Wildcats (17-11, 9-3 HBCUAC) fell to third after dropping the series against the HBCUAC leader and defending tournament champion Talladega College. They capped the series by claiming a 16-6 run-rule victory in the finale, giving the Tornadoes their first conference loss. Smauri Abram went 4-for-5 with two home runs in last week's series. Ivan Del Villar hit his second grand slam and eighth home run of the season in the second game against Talladega College. He currently leads the HBCUAC with eight home runs and 37 runs batted in. Nick Rodriguez earned his conference-leading fifth victory in the finale. He struck out five batters in 6 1/3 innings.

Voorhees University (12-9, 9-6 HBCUAC) is led by outfielder Emory Guilford and infielder Jordyn Hill. Guilford is leading his team with a .438 batting average and shares the team lead with Hill at five home runs. Hill leads in RBI with 27 and is hitting .415. Ethan Farrell is the top arm on the Tigers' pitching staff. He is 3-2 with a 6.24 earned-run average and struck out 29 batters in 31 1/3 innings.

This weekend will mark the first meeting between the Wildcats and Tigers. Voorhees University joined the HBCUAC in July after competing as an independent in the Continental Athletic Conference. The Wildcats are third in the HBCUAC standings, trailing Talladega College by two games and Southern University at New Orleans by one game. Three of the Knights four series wins came against the bottom three teams in the conference.
