Perez, Porter claim HBCUAC Weekly Baseball Honors
After leading the defending regular season conference champion Wiley University baseball team to a sweep over Tougaloo College, Jacob Perez claims Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Baseball Player of the Week and Jalen Porter brings home Pitcher of the Week for the third consecutive week. The athletes were recognized for their performances between April 7-13.
During the week he was honored for his four seasons with the Wildcats, Perez carried them offensively. He went 7-for-11, hit two home runs, drove in nine runs and scored three. He had multiple hits and RBI in all three games against Tougaloo. He reached base in every plate appearance in the second game. For the week, Perez posted an impressive 1.182 slugging percentage.
Porter threw his second straight complete game and his second start in the last three where he did not give up an earned run. He held Tougaloo to an unearned run on three hits and struck out nine with no walks. He earned his sixth win and continues to lead the HBCUAC with 82 strikeouts. His performance helped the Wildcats stay within striking distance of HBCUAC leader Talladega.
This is the eighth and ninth weekly honor won by the Wildcats. Keyon Guillory earned Pitcher of the Week for January 20-February 2 and February 10-16. Isaac Burciaga claimed Pitcher of the Week for February 3-9. Ivan Del Villar earned Player of the Week for February 3-9 and Smauri Abram earned the award for February 17-23.
The Wildcats are a game behind Talladega for the lead in the HBCUAC standings. They host Southern University at New Orleans on Saturday and Sunday.
