Perez earns Arthur Ashe Jr. Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Wiley University baseball team captain Jacob Perez, one of the main contributors to the team's on-field success, earned recognition for his academic performance. Diverse Education named him Arthur Ashe Jr. Baseball Sports-Scholar of the Year.
Perez achieved the honor by maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and being active in the community. He is the first Wiley athlete to earn special recognition from Diverse Education. The complete list of the 2025 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars will be published in the June edition of Diverse Education magazine.. In the Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 semesters, Perez posted a 4.0 GPA, raising his cumulative GPA to 3.9. Perez earned Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Daktronics Scholar Athlete twice.
He was active in community service with his teammates, volunteering at local events in the Marshall area or helping at local schools. In his four seasons, Perez batted in the top of the lineup. He helped the Wildcats win the 2024 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season title and secure two berths to the Black College World Series. He finished his career with a .303 batting average, 124 runs, 157 hits, eight home runs and 96 RBI. Perez graduated in May with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.
