Baseball takes on No. 20 Texas A&M-Victoria
MARSHALL, Texas – The Wiley University baseball team looks to find its rhythm on the road this weekend as it travels to Victoria for a three-game series against No. 20 Texas A&M University-Victoria at Riverside Stadium.
The series begins with a 6:30 p.m. game on Friday and concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday with a 3 p.m. First pitch. Fans can follow the action via the Jaguars' YouTube channel or through live statistics linked on the Wiley athletics website.
Seeking an Offensive Spark
The Wildcats are eager to turn the page after a difficult opening series at Louisiana State University at Alexandria. Wiley struggled to find consistency at the plate, tallying only three hits across a doubleheader.
Despite the quiet bats, there were bright spots in the lineup. Orenthal Lewis provided a spark with a double in the season opener, while Tyson Minter drove in a run with a double of his own during the second game.
Dominance on the Mound
While the offense searches for its stride, the Wiley pitching staff showed significant promise in the opening weekend.
-
Manuel Contreras: Threw four innings against the Generals, keeping them off the scoreboard in three of those frames and racking up a career-high four strikeouts.
-
Ethan Jones: Logged a career-high six innings in his first start of 2026, also striking out a career-best six batters.
Scouting the Jaguars
Texas A&M-Victoria (2-1), formerly University of Houston at Victoria, enters the series with national momentum after splitting with Texas Wesleyan and rallying to defeat Huston-Tillotson. The Jaguars feature a high-powered offense led by Antonio Benitez, who is hitting 7-for-11 with eight runs scored.
Connor Kaiser leads the team with six RBIs, followed by Jackson Purcell, who maintains a .462 average. On the mound, the Jaguars rely on Blane Zeplin, who allowed just two hits in five innings during his first start, and reliever Matthew Mejia, who carries a 2.25 ERA.
Series History
The Wildcats face a tough historical climb this weekend. Wiley is 7-24 all-time against the Jaguars and 3-14 when playing in Victoria. Last season, the Jaguars swept the Wildcats at Riverside Stadium, outscoring them 26-6. Wiley is seeking its first win over Texas A&M-Victoria since Feb. 19, 2022.
