Baseball takes two against Texas College
Wiley University baseball had four pitchers combine for a one-hit shutout in a 14-0 Game 1 victory. The Wildcats walked off with a 7-6 win in the second game, playing mostly their reserves against Texas College on Tuesday at Coker Field.
The Wildcats improve to 4-2 at home and finish the homestand with a three-game winning streak. The victory is their 11th straight against the Steers dating back to April 12, 2019.
Nick Rodriguez, Kaidin Resendez, Jose Munoz Jr. and Bernardo Cortez shut down the Steers, only facing three batters above the minimum of 21. They only allowed three base runners. Resendez threw three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Cortez struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh.
Jaziel Martinez led the Wildcats' offense with two hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth, which sparked a 10-run inning for the Wildcats. He drove in another run with a bases-loaded walk later in the inning. Laker McPherson went 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBI. He hit a two-RBI single in the fourth and drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. Ivan Del Villar went 2-for-3 with a two-RBI single in the fourth. Amir Mason drove in three runs with two sacrifice flies and got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth. Playing against his former team, Orenthal Lewis scored three times, reaching base on two walks and a hit by pitch. The Wildcats outhit the Steers 10-1 and benefited from nine walks, three hit batters and an error.
Trey Clark and Mason were the only starters who played in the second game. Ben Hamilton made his Wildcat debut starting in right field. Darron Scott made his collegiate debut pinch running in the seventh. Javarey Valentine made his collegiate debut as a courtesy runner for catcher Daniel de los Rios.
The Wildcats fell behind 3-0 after allowing two home runs in the first inning. With two outs, Trey Clark got hit by the pitch. Marshel Herman advanced him to third with a single. Clark scored on a wild pitch. Hamilton led off the second with a single. Cameron McCoy followed with an infield single. Hamilton ran for third on the throw to first. Texas College's first baseman Phillip Scott attempted to throw him out but throw the ball in the outfield, which brought home Hamilton and moved McCoy to second. Deekota Johnson drove in McCoy with a double to the left field wall. Johnson gave the Wildcats a 4-3 lead, scoring on single by Ajari Camp.
Wiley extended the lead to two in the third, when Hamilton hit a triple to the right-center field gap, scoring Herman, who singled to right field. Texas College left fielder Efrain Ozuna homered in the fourth and hit a two-run home run in the sixth, which put the Wildcats behind 6-5.
De los Rios led off the sixth with a walk. Valentine advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. He moved to third on an error by the second baseman on a ground ball hit by Camp. A throwing error by the catcher allowed Valentine to score the tying run.
Coren Lewis took over on the mound in the seventh inning. He allowed a leadoff single to Texas College second baseman Wyatt Ellis, who stole second. A ground ball to second moved him to third. With one out and runners on the corner, Texas College attempted a double steal but Skyler Nelson threw to home to get Ellis for the second out. Lewis ended the inning with a strikeout.
Jesse Jones led off the seventh with a walk. Scott pinch ran for him. Hamilton picked up his third hit with a single. De los Rios laid down a perfect bunt in front of home to reach on a single to load the bases. McCoy ended it with a single for the left side to bring home Scott.
Hamilton went 3-for-4 in his debut. McCoy went 2-for-3 and scored. Herman went 2-for-4 with a run.
Estevan Baca made his third start and went two innings. Juan Pena pitched two innings. John Barajas, who played in the outfield in the previous games, threw two innings. Lewis picked up his first career victory. The Wildcats did not allow a walk.
Wiley will travel to Central Baptist College on Thursday. The doubleheader begins at noon.
