Baseball extends streak with sweep over Central Baptist
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Wiley University baseball bounced back after allowing three runs in the first inning for a 7-3 victory in Game 1. In Game 2, it rallied in the seventh inning for a 5-2 victory over Central Baptist College Thursday at DeJanis Memorial Field at the Burns Park Baseball Complex.
The Wildcats (6-7) extend their winning streak to five games and improve to 2-5 on the road. They move to 2-4 against the Mustangs.
GAME 1
Two errors and three hits led to three runs for the Mustangs in the first inning. The Wildcats immediately cut into the margin. Trey Clark led off the second with a single and John Barajas hit his second home run of the season to cut the margin to one.
Eddie Garza led off the third with a walk and scored on Amir Mason's triple to center field, tying the game. Ivan Del Villar hit a flyball to right field, which was deep enough for Mason to score the go-ahead run.
Wiley extended the lead in the fourth inning. Jaziel Martinez and Laker McPherson singled with one out. Kaleb Gilner brought home Javarey Valentine, who courtesy ran for Martinez to increase the margin to two. In the sixth inning, Wiley added insurance runs with Marshel Herman hitting his first career home run and Valentine scoring on a ground ball to second.
Mason went 3-for-4 with his fourth-inning run and RBI. Valentine scored two runs. Eight of Wiley's nine hitters recorded base hits. They outhit the Mustangs 10-6.
Rodriguez earned his third victory in his fifth start. In his last five innings of work, he only allowed two runners to reach base. He retired the side in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Juan Pena sealed the win, striking out the final three batters after allowing a leadoff single.
GAME 2
Wiley fell behind in the second inning after giving up two hits and an error. It got a run back in the fourth. Mason led off with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Del Villar brought him home with a fly ball to center.
The Wildcats were retired in order in the fifth and sixth innings. Del Villar led of the seventh with a single to right. He advanced to third when Barajas reached on an error by the pitcher. Orenthal Lewis tied the game with an RBI single. Martinez walked to load the bases. Ajari Camp brought home Barajas with a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Cameron McCoy, who pinch ran for Lewis, scored on Kaleb Gilner's ground ball to second. Valentine scored when Mason reached on an error.
Del Villar and Lewis got the only hits for the Wildcats. However, along with the three errors, they benefited from four walks and a hit batter. Mason, Lewis and McCoy stole bases.
Ethan Jones picked up his first win of the season. He scattered five hits across six innings and struck out two. Estevan Baca earned his first career save, only allowing a hit in the seventh inning.
The Wildcats visit NCAA Division I school Grambling State University for an exhibition game on Tuesday. They will open Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference play against Huston-Tillotson University on February 20 and 21 at Coker Field.
