Baseball falls short against Texas A&M-Texarkana

Several Wiley University baseball players saw the field on Tuesday. They rallied in the ninth inning but fell short in a 12-10 loss against Texas A&M University-Texarkana at Coker Field.

The Wildcats (8-9, 2-1 HBCUAC) fall to 6-4 at home and snap a two-game winning streak. With the likelihood of their Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) series being moved up, head coach Kendrick Biggs decided to conserve his pitchers. He also limited the play of his starters, pulling most of them after the fourth inning.

Reyli Escobedo opened and held the Eagles scoreless through the first two innings. Wiley fell behind in the third inning. Kadin Resendez took over on the mound and was only able to record one out. An error, a walk and a bunt single loaded the bases. A hit by pitch put Texas A&M-Texarkana on the board. John Barajas took over and got a double play to end the inning.

The Eagles (12-12, 3-3 RRAC) added two runs in the fourth on a walk and two hits. Wiley answered. Amir Mason led off with a walk and stole second and third. A ground ball to short by Trey Clark brought Mason home. Orenthal Lewis brought the Wildcats within one with his first home run of the season to left-center field in the fifth.

Texas A&M-Texarkana answered with outfielder Tobin Jones hitting a two-run home run. It recorded three more hits, allowing two more runs to score, including one on an error. The first five batters reached before Wiley recorded an out. The Eagles sent all nine batters to the plate and increased their lead to 8-2.

The Wildcats gave up three runs in the seventh and one in the ninth. Devin Gladney led off the ninth by being hit by a pitch. Jose Villalobos hit a double to the gap in left-center field Daniel Los Rios brought both home with a double to the right-center field gap. With two outs, Deekota Johnson reached on a fielder's choice Javarey Valentine walked and stole second. Tyson Minter drove in Johnson and Valentine with a single up the middle. Gladney blasted his second home run of the season to pull Wiley within two.

The Wildcats will resume HBCUAC play at Huston-Tilotson on Thursday and Friday.
