Baseball comes up empty against Nelson
WAXAHACHIE, Texas - Wiley University baseball was held in check against Nelson University as it only managed three hits in a 10-0 loss Tuesday at the Lions Athletic Complex.
The Wildcats (12-12, 6-3 HBCUAC) end their winning streak at four games. It is the third time they've been shut out. They drop their 12th straight game against the Lions.
Wiley didn't get its first hit until the top of the third and got two in the fourth. It had its best scoring opportunity in the third inning. With one out, Jose Villalobos was hit by a pitch and stole second. Laker McPherson singled, advancing Villalobos to third. He stole second, but the next two batters struck out to end the inning. The Wildcats struck out 13 times.
Trey Clark led off the fourth with a single and Barajas singled with one out. Clark got caught stealing third. A strikeout ended the inning. The Wildcats didn't get another hit. Their next 12 batters were retired. Villalobos reached base in the eighth on a walk.
Head coach Kendrick Biggs didn't throw his regular pitchers, conserving their arms for their upcoming Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference series against Dillard University this weekend. Jerrius Vickers made his first career start and went three innings. He gave up three earned runs on four hits and struck out one. Kadin Resendez, Jose Munoz Jr., Coren Lewis and Case Butterfield threw the last 4 2/3 innings.
Wiley fell behind in the second inning after giving up four runs on four hits and an error. The first and fourth innings were the only ones it held Nelson scoreless.
The Wildcats will continue HBCUAC play against Dillard University at Coker Field on Saturday and Sunday.
