Baseball overpowers Arkansas Baptist College
Wiley University baseball returned to the win column as it took control with nine runs in the second inning of a 17-7 run-rule victory over Arkansas Baptist College on Wednesday at Coker Field.
The Wildcats (16-16, 9-6 HBCUAC) improve to 12-6 at home. This is their second run-rule victory of the season. The win snaps a three-game losing streak.
Trailing 2-1 entering the second, Ben Hamilton led off with a walk and Markis Fontenot followed with a single. With one out, Arkansas Baptist pitcher Jerrick Edmonds threw past the first baseman. Hamilton scored on the error and Fontenot advanced to third. Fontenot scored the go-ahead run on a steal of home while Cameron McCoy, who courtesy ran for catcher Jared Camargo, stole second. Ajari Camp extended the lead with his fourth home run of the season.
In his second at-bat in the inning, Fontenot hit an RBI single. Deekota Johnson followed with a two-RBI double, which pushed the lead to eight. Wiley sent 13 batters to the plate and recorded six hits. The Buffaloes answered with three runs on three doubles and a single, which cut the margin to five.
Wiley scored twice in the third and added four runs in the fourth. Trey Clark and John Barajas executed a double steal with the latter swiping home. Deekota Johnson hit an RBI triple. Two runs scored on wild pitches to extend the lead to 11.
Fontenot had his most productive game at the plate with two hits, three runs and an RBI. Johnson went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI. Ivan Del Villar went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Estevan Baca picked up his fifth win. He held the Buffaloes to an unearned run on three hits and struck out three in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Reyli Escobedo and Kadin Resendez pitched the last two innings.
The Wildcats will return to the field on April 7 when they visit Texas A&M University-Texarkana. They lost 12-10 to the Eagles at Coker Field on March 3.
