Baseball edges Texas A&M-Texarkana
TEXARKANA, Texas - Wiley University outfielder Ajari Camp hit an RBI double in the eighth inning that put the Wildcats up for good in a 3-2 victory over Texas A&M University-Texarkana Tuesday at George Dobson Field.
The win is the Wildcats' third against the Eagles in program history and first on the road. They improve to 5-10 on the road and 8-10 in non-conference games.
Wiley fell behind after allowing a run on two hits. Deekota Johnson led off the sixth with a single and stole second. Cameron McCoy reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt, after which he stole second to move into scoring position. Amir Mason gave the Wildcats the lead with a two-RBI double to left-center.
The lead held up until the bottom of the seventh when the Eagles tied it with a two-out triple and a fielding error. McCoy reached on an error to start the eighth. With one out, Camp brought him home with his double to left.
Reyli Escobedo worked around a couple two-out base runners in the eighth. After allowing two walks - one intentional - and a wild pitch moving the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Resendez got a ground out to close the game.
Wanting to conserve their pitchers for their upcoming Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) series, assistant coach Nikaylen Morrison didn't have anyone throw more than two innings. Ethan Jones opened and threw two perfect innings. Juan Pena picked up the win only allowing an unearned run and striking out three. Resendez earned his first save. Wiley's pitchers struck out 11 and only walked two, with one intentional.
The Wildcats (17-16) will visit Tougaloo College for an HBCUAC series on Saturday and Sunday.
