Baseball heads to Tougaloo for HBCUAC series

Wiley University baseball continues Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at Tougaloo College on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's finale start at noon. All three games will stream on the Urban Edge Network.
 
The Wildcats (17-16, 9-6 HBCUAC) enter the series on a two-game winning streak after defeating Arkansas Baptist 17-7 on April 1 and a 3-2 victory over Texas A&M University-Texarkana on Tuesday. Ethan Jones, Nick Rodriguez, Juan Pena, Reyli Escobedo and Kadin Resendez limited the Eagles to one earned run on six hits and struck out 11 batters. Amir Mason hit a two-RBI double and Ajari Camp hit a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth.
 
John Barajas hit his team-leading fifth home run against Nelson University on March 31. He recorded three hits, three runs and three RBI, earning HBCUAC Newcomer of the Week for his third of the season.
 
Tougaloo (10-18, 5-10 HBCUAC)needs to win to stay in contention for the 2026 Hope Credit Union HBCUAC Baseball Championship. After losing to Southern University at New Orleans, it fell to 1.5 games behind Philander Smith and Dillard for fourth place in the West.
 
Gage Lewis leads the team with a .359 batting average. He has 18 RBI with nine runs. Robert Powe leads the team with 27 RBI. He is hitting .316. Lekeidric Sutton and Grant Carmichael lead the team with 20 runs.
 
On the mound, Caleb Carter leads with a 4.63 ERA. He is 4-4 and struck out 43 batters in 58 1/3 innings. Braylon Smith has two wins and 26 strikeouts.
 
This weekend will mark the 20th, 21st and 22nd meetings. The Wildcats have dominated the series winning 17 of 19 games and all nine games as conference opponents. This will be the second time they've visited the Bulldogs in HBCUAC play.
