Men's Basketball gears up for High-Stakes 2024-25 Season

The Wiley University men's basketball team will tip-off the 2024-25 campaign against No. 12 Lousiana State University in Alexandria at 3 p.m. Saturday in Alumni Gymnasium.

The Wildcats are setting the stage for a promising 2024 season under the direction of Head Coach Joseph Flegler, now entering his third season with the team. After a challenging previous season, finishing 12-14 and taking fifth in the conference, the Wildcats are motivated to surpass their quarterfinal finish and make a deeper impact in the conference.

The Wildcats have a packed schedule, starting with a high-profile game against the present Red River Athletic Conference Champions, LSU-Alexandria, at the Alumni Gymnasium on October 26. The game marks a significant challenge right out of the gate, given LSU-Alexandria's No. 12 ranking in the NAIA. Additional key games include the Homecoming clash against Arkansas Baptist on November 2, and the intense rematch on December 16 against Fisk University, which ousted the Wildcats in last season's conference tournament.

The loss of key players like guard Delor Johnson and center Christian Beeke to graduation has left significant gaps, but returning players like Demarius Pitts and Jalen Bates are expected to step up. Pitts, known for his scoring capability, and Bates, recognized for his defensive skills, will be pivotal in navigating through the season's challenges. Also returning is starting guard Shamir Mosley and key reserves Tayvion Fisher, Devon Barshow.

The coaching staff, led by the experienced Flegler, who holds a career record of 41-34, is looking to leverage the blend of new talent and established players to forge a successful season.
