Men's Basketball falls short at Tougaloo College
TOUGALOO, Miss. - The Wiley University men's basketball team had three double-digit scoring performances from Shamir Mosley, Tayvion Fisher and Devon Barshow. However, it could not take advantage of these performances in a 70-66 loss to Tougaloo College in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) game Saturday at Kroger Gymnasium.
Mosley had his highest scoring output of the season with 18, hitting six of 11 shots. Fisher scored 15 points on six field goals, including three 3-pointers and added five rebounds. It was only the second time this season that he didn't score 20 or more. Barshow tallied 10 points on three made baskets. Taj Toney had his most productive game with nine points and three rebounds. Jalen Bates led the team with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Wildcats (3-4, 1-2 HBCUAC) could not match the two-time defending regular season champion Bulldogs, who shot 53.8 percent from the field. Wiley hit 41.1 percent of its shots with 24 of its 56 shot attempts from 3-point territory. Tougaloo only attempted 13 shots from long distance out of its 39 attempts. It got to the free throw line more often outscoring the Wildcats 23-11.
Wiley took an early lead on 3-pointers by Demarius Pitts and Fisher. It was held scoreless for nearly nine minutes as it missed seven shots and turned the ball over five times. This allowed Tougaloo to build an eight-point lead. A 3-pointer by Toney cut the margin to three with 5:14 left in the first half. Tre Booker hit a 3-pointer to pull the Wildcats within 27-25 at halftime.
Barshow nailed a three-pointer in the first minute of the second half to give the Wildcats their first lead since the first three minutes of the game. It was short-lived. The Bulldogs regained the lead with a 3-pointer and free throws. Wiley trailed by as many as 14 with 9:37 left in the game. Barshow hit a 3-pointer with 4:46 left to cut the margin to seven. Mosley recorded an and-one to trim the deficit to 66-64 with 42 seconds left. Tougaloo hit four straight free throws to ice the game.
The Wildcats will visit National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III school University of Texas at Tyler for a nonconference game on Tuesday.
