Men's Basketball suffers Overtime Heartbreaker after Second Half Push

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - In a heart-stopping Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference contest at Mims Gymnasium Monday, the Wiley University men's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half but were unable to finish off Philander Smith in a 72-66 overtime loss.

Wiley (7-8, 5-6 HBCUAC) trailed 34-31 by halftime. It struggled initially in the second half, managing only one field goal in the first eight minutes, which allowed the Panthers to extend their lead to 11 points. However, a pivotal moment arose when Wiley's Devon Barshow hit two shots and Shamir Mosley made a 3-pointer to spearhead a comeback, narrowing the margin to just three points with 10:12 remaining on the clock. Mosley later tied the game at 50 with his strategic jumper and Barshow's clutch second-chance bucket put the Wildcats ahead 55-53 with just over four minutes left in regulation.

Leading 57-53 with 3:04 left in the game, Demarius Pitts stole the ball and was subsequently fouled hard by Panthers' Robert Roberson on a layup attempt. Two Wiley players received technical fouls for their reaction to the incident. This sequence allowed Philander Smith to close the gap to 59-57 with four successful free throws. Pitts was helped off the floor and didn't return.

The teams exchange baskets to end regulation tied at 61. The Wildcats struggled to score in the first three minutes-plus of overtime, ultimately conceding an eight-point advantage to the Panthers.

Mosley and Pitts led the Wildcats with 15 points each, Additional notable performances included Barshow with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Jalen Bates' an all-around effort with five assists and four steals.

The Wildcats will return home and face the University of the Virgin Islands on Saturday for its first game at Alumni Gymnasium in 2025.
