Men's Basketball suffers Overtime Setback against Arkansas Baptist

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - In a tense and dramatic non-conference basketball showdown, the Wiley University men's basketball team could not hold on to a double-digit lead in a 72-68 loss to Arkansas Baptist College on Tuesday.

The Wildcats (8-10, 6-7 HBCUAC), despite trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, managed to finish with a 35-34 lead. Shamir Mosley hit a jumper, Tre Booker hit a 3-pointer and Devon Barshow sank key free throws helping the Wildcats close the half on a 10-point run.

Cortez Collins and Barshow started the second half strong, hitting three shots. Demarius Pitts made a layup and a 3-pointer to give Wiley a 56-46 lead with 7:02 left in the game. It only made one field goal in a five-minute stretch, allowing the Buffaloes to tie the game at 59. Barshow briefly put the Wildcats ahead but Arkansas Baptist answered. Wiley's game-winning attempt was off the mark, sending the game to overtime.

The Buffaloes grabbed the lead and didn't give it up. The game was very chippy with 54 fouls called and five technical fouls issued. On multiple occasions players had to be separated. It culminated with 1:25 left in overtime, when a skirmish resulted in an ejection for both teams.

Barshow led the Wildcats with 20 points, hitting seven shots. He contributed six rebounds and two steals. Pitts followed with 12 points. Collins finished in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. Jalen Bates tallied eight rebounds, seven points and five assists.

The Wildcats will return home and face Tougaloo College, which is tied for the lead in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference standings, on Thursday.
