Men's Basketball falls to Tougaloo on Senior Night

On the night it honored eight seniors, the Wiley University men's basketball team started strong but was could not maintain the early momentum in a 76-55 loss against Tougaloo College in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference game Thursday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Wildcats (8-11, 6-8 HBCUAC) drop their third consecutive game and finish 2-5 at home. The loss causes them to slip into eighth place in the conference standings.

The game opened spectacularly for Wiley, as they leapt to a 12-2 run, buoyed by Raymond Guillory's sharp shooting, which included eight early points. However, the Bulldogs quickly answered back with a decisive 14-point run mid-way through the first half, shifting the tide of the game and putting Wiley into an eight-point deficit. It trailed 35-28 at halftime.

The Wildcats were unable to rally in the second half as they only hit one field goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Tougaloo capitalized and stretched their lead to 20 points. Noteworthy performances included Raymond Guillory as top scorer with 12 points and contributions from Tre Booker and Demarius Pitts, who both added 9 points each in their final home game. Additionally, Bobby Baker III added 7 points.

Despite the loss, there were moments of personal achievement as Steven Lamar made his college debut, entering the game for two minutes. The Wildcats now look to rebound as they prepare to face Southern University at New Orleans on February 13. They defeated the Knights 91-80 in overtime at Alumni Gymnasium on November 14.
