Men's Basketball drops Regular Season Finale against Virgin Islands

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands - In a closely contested battle at the Elridge Blake Sports & Fitness Center on Wednesday, the Wiley University men's basketball team fell short against the University of the Virgin Islands, 71-64 in the regular season finale.

The Wildcats (9-13, 7-10 HBCUAC) finish 2-7 in road games and finish ninth in the conference standings. It's their lowest finish since 2021-22, which was the season before Joseph Flegler took over as head coach. They split the regular season series with the Buccaneers for the second straight season.

Wiley led early but settled for 3-point attempts on three consecutive possessions. This allowed the Virgin Islands to take a five-point lead. Demarius Pitts hit two shots which gave Wiley a 14-13 lead with 7:54 remaining in the first half. It came up empty on four possessions which the Buccaneers took advantage of and pulled out to a five-point edge. The Wildcats went to the locker room, trailing 29-26.

With 14:38 left, Wiley missed three straight shots and fell behind by double digits. Pitts sparked a rally with a 3-pointer. Two foul shots by Tre Booker pulled the Wildcats within three with more than eight minutes remaining. A turnover and two missed shots helped the Virgin Islands push the margin to 10 with five minutes left in the game. The Wildcats didn't closer than six points.

Pitts led all scorers with 24 points, marking his fifth game with 20 or more. He also grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Devon Barshow followed with 14 and tallied two rebounds and two steals. Jalen Bates provided seven points and four steals.

The Wildcats will head to Stillman College for the 2025 Hope Credit Union Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference Basketball Championship at Birthright Alumni Hall from February 25-March 2. Tournament seeds and matchups will be announced at the end of the week.
