Men's Basketball's rally falls short against Tougaloo College
Wiley University men's basketball player Caleibria McDonald delivered a career performance off the bench. Shamir Mosley led the team with 16 points. Offensive struggles at inopportune times prevented the Wildcats from taking the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference opener in a 63-54 loss to Tougaloo College on Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Wildcats (1-7, 0-1 HBCUAC) haven't won since their season-opening win on October 25 and fall to 1-3 at home. This is the first time they've dropped their conference opener since 2022.
Both teams were evenly matched offensively, with Wiley and Tougaloo each shooting 40.4 percent from the field. Wiley shot slightly better from 3-point range - hitting five to two by Tougaloo. Turnovers hampered the Wildcats' offense, as they committed 19, which led to 19 points for the Bulldogs.
McDonald scored 15 points, hitting six of 10 shots, including three of five from 3-point territory. He contributed four rebounds and three assists. Mosley hit six shots while adding six rebounds and three assists. Cortez Collins provided eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Wildcats trailed 12-10 with 8:50 left in the first half. Five turnovers allowed Tougaloo to go on a 12-point run. Wiley was held scoreless for four minutes. Raymond Guillory ended the drought with a layup. It trailed by as many as 16. Two three-pointers by McDonald and three free throws by Mosley cut the margin to seven at halftime.
A 3-pointer by McDonald pulled Wiley within two with 16:34 left in the game. It only hit one field goal in the next five minutes and turned the ball over three times. The Bulldogs took advantage of these struggles and pushed the lead to 11. A layup by Collins sparked a nine-point run for the Wildcats. Guillory stole the ball and laid it in to trim the margin to five with 7:54 left in the game.
A foul and a technical foul gave Tougaloo four free throws, which increased the lead to nine. Wiley didn't get closer than six. With four minutes remaining, it turned the ball over on three straight possessions, which allowed Tougaloo to increase the lead to 13.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference game against Texas A&M University-Texarkana at 7 p.m.
