Shooting struggles hold back Men's Basketball
Wiley University men's basketball could not overcome its first-half shooting struggles in a 60-47 loss to Texas A&M University-Texarkana on Tuesday at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Wildcats (1-8, 0-1 HBCUAC) drop to 1-4 at Alumni Gymnasium. They are looking for their first win since October 25. It was their second straight loss to Texas A&M-Texarkana.
Wiley shot 6-for-31 in the first half and didn't make their first field goal until 12:40. Texas A&M-Texarkana took advantage of the shooting woes and opened with a 17-point run. Shamir Mosley hit a 3-pointer and stole the ball, which set up a dunk by LaRonte McHenry, cutting the margin to 10. The Wildcats only hit three shots in the last nine minutes and 30 seconds. They trailed 31-14 at halftime.
A sluggish start to the second half enabled the Eagles to open with a 16-3 run, putting Wiley in a 30-point hole. Three-pointers by LaRonte McHenry, Ka'Leb Connors and Mosley cut the margin to 17. The Wildcats only made two field goals in the next six minutes, which allowed the Eagles to push the margin to 21.
They were outshot 32.3 to 26.6 percent. Wiley was also dominated on the glass, 58-41. Both teams committed 17 turnovers, with Wiley outscoring the Eagles 20-16 in points off turnovers.
Mosley led the team with 16 points, hitting four shots - including three 3-pointers. He also led in steals with three. McHenry followed with 11. Cortez Collins recorded a team-high eight rebounds and a game-high four blocks. Raymond Guillory led the team with five assists.
The Wildcats will resume Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference play against Southern University at New Orleans on December 4 at Alumni Gymnasium.
