Scoring Droughts hold back Men's Basketball against Philander Smith
Wiley University guard Shamir Mosley scored 22 points and two others reached double figures. In the end, scoring droughts near the end of the first half and beginning of the second half, kept the Wildcats from the win column in an 89-79 loss to the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference leader Philander Smith University Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Wildcats (1-11, 0-4 HBCUAC) enter the holiday break still seeking their first conference win and first overall since the season opener on October 25. They fall to 1-7 at Alumni Gymnasium.
Mosley hit seven of 15 shots, including two 3-pointers for his third game with 20 or more points this season and fifth in his career. He added three rebounds and three assists. Collins followed with a career-high 16 points and 14 rebounds for his first career double-double. The HBCUAC leader in blocks added four. Amoni Waring made his second career start and tallied 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers while adding three rebounds and two assists. James Rudd Jr. led the team with six assists.
Wiley took an early lead on buckets by Collins, Jayden Roach and Caleibria McDonald. Philander Smith responded and took a five-point lead. Three-pointers by LaBree Williams and Shamir Mosley put the Wildcats back in front 28-27. With 3:47 left, they were unable to hit a shot. The Panthers closed the half on an 11-point run to take a 45-35 lead at halftime.
Early in the second half, Wiley only hit two shots in an over six-minute stretch. Philander Smith took advantage and pushed its lead to 24 points with 10:20 remaining. Raymond Reece, who is the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) leading rebounder, fouled out with 8:52 remaining.
A jumper by Mosley sparked a 13-point run. Three-pointers by Mosley and Rudd cut the margin to single digits. Mosley hit a layup and was fouled. He hit the free throw to complete the 3-point play, pulling the Wildcats within six. They would not get closer as the Panthers scored on four of its next five possessions and increased the margin to 15 points.
Wiley was outshot 51.6 to 43.7 percent. It outrebounded the Panthers 42-39. Thirteen of those rebounds were on offense as it outscored Philander Smith 17-3 in second-chance points. The turnover battle went to the Panthers 21-15, resulting in 24 points.
The Wildcats will return from the holiday break on January 8 when it visits Paul Quinn College for its first game in 2026.
