Men's Basketball lets lead slip away against Huston-Tillotson
AUSTIN, Texas - Wiley University men's basketball guard Shamir Mosley scored a game-high 23 points, but the Wildcats were unable to hold off Huston-Tillotson University in a 71-69 loss in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference game Saturday at Mary Branch Gymnasium.
The Wildcats (1-13, 0-6 HBCUAC) are still searching for their first win since October 25. They lose their eighth straight road game.
Mosley shot 7-for-11 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line, recording his fourth 20-plus scoring game and sixth in his career. He added three assists, two rebounds and two steals. Donavan Seamster followed with a season-high 19 points on an 8-for-17 shooting performance. Three of his field goals were from 3-point territory. The rest of the team shot 9-for-35. The Wildcats were outshot 41.4 to 38.1 percent.
LaBree Williams led the team with 12 rebounds while adding eight points. Cortez Collins recorded nine rebounds and four blocks. Amoni Waring followed with three.
Mosley hit four shots and Seamster hit a 3-pointer to give Wiley a 61-54 lead with 7:13 left in the game. The Wildcats went nearly four minutes without a field goal, which allowed the Rams to trim the margin to one. Seamster ended the drought with a 3-pointer. Williams hit a 3-pointer with 1:53 left to increase the lead to seven.
Wiley missed two shots, the front end of a one-and-one and turned it over, which allowed Huston-Tillotson to tie the game at 69. It had a chance to take the lead but a steal led to a layup, which put the Rams ahead with 4.5 seconds remaining. Wiley's last chance shot was blocked.
In the first half, the Wildcats trailed by as many as nine. A layup by Williams and a 3-pointer by Mosley cut the lead to two. Seamster tied the game at 32 with a layup. He gave the Wildcats a 37-36 lead with a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining.
