Men's Basketball opens HBCUAC Championship against Oakwood

Wiley University men's basketball begins its run for the 2026 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference Championship against East No. 5 seed Oakwood University in the opening round of the 2026 Hope Credit Union HBCUAC Basketball Championship scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday at Stillman College's Birthright Alumni Hall.

The Wildcats (1-20, 0-12 HBCUAC) are looking to extend their season with their first victory since October 25. They closed the regular season with losses against Huston-Tillotson University and Paul Quinn College. Shamir Mosley recorded his sixth and seventh 20-plus scoring games with 25 and 23 points, respectively. He increased his scoring average to 17.1 points, which ranks third in the HBCUAC. Mosley earned All-HBCUAC Second Team. Cortez Collins averaged 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game in Wiley's final regular season games. He finished the regular season as the HBCUAC leader with 59 blocks. He was selected to the All-Defensive Team.

Though Wiley has had struggles against the HBCUAC West, they have fared well against the East. Last season, it went 4-3. It is 13-10 against the East under Joseph Flegler.

Oakwood (9-17, 4-8 HBCUAC) finished the season losing four of its last five. It fell from fourth to sixth in the East Division. Jordan Bell leads the Ambassadors with 17.9 points per game, which ranks second in the HBCUAC. Joshua Barnett follows with 10.9 points per game. Grener Polynice is Oakwood's leading rebounder with 6.3 per game.

Tuesday's game will be the sixth meeting against the Ambassadors. Wiley has won four of the previous five. This will be the first time they've played in the postseason. The winner will face West No. 3 seed Dillard University in the second round at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The Wildcats seek their first HBCUAC postseason championship and third overall conference tournament title in program history. They won the Red River Athletic Conference championship in 2007 and 2014.
