Men's Soccer releases 2024 Schedule
The Wiley University men's soccer team will play three home matches and take on the top teams in the Continental Athletic Conference as it announced its schedule on Wednesday.
The Wildcats will play 14 matches in their second season since making their return last season. The 2024 slate will open with scrimmages against Jacksonville College on Aug. 13 and Paris Junior College on August 17. The regular season will begin on Aug. 22 against Nelson University, formerly known as Southwestern Assemblies of God University. It will be the Lions' first trip to Marshall since 2015.
Wiley will play the next three on the road against North American University (Aug. 24), Texas Wesleyan University (Aug. 26) and Texas A&M University-Texarkana (Aug. 31). It will return home for its final home matches against Arlington Baptist University (Sept. 6) and Tougaloo College (Sept. 8).
The Wildcats will begin a three-match road swing against William Carey University (Sept. 14), Louisiana Christian University (Sept. 18) and Arlington Baptist (Sept. 27). They will play two matches at Georgia Gwinnett College against the host Grizzlies and Florida College. The Grizzlies went 6-8-4 and fell in the CAC Semifinals. They advanced to the NAIA Opening Round in the previous seven seasons and reached the final site in 2022, 2019, 2018 and 2017. Florida College went 7-8-1 last season.
Wiley will finish the regular season by competing in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference Invitational in Jackson, Miss. The conference doesn't sponsor soccer because less than six schools participate. Oakwood University, Talladega College and Tougaloo are the only HBCUAC schools that field teams.
"I believe this will be a challenging schedule for us," said Wiley University Director of Athletics Rafael Gonzalez, who compiled the schedule before his promotion. "We're playing against some of the top teams in the Red River Athletic Conference. The matches at Georgia Gwinnett could help bolster our ranking in the CAC. The HBCUAC Invitational will give our players something to play for."
The 2024 Continental Athletic Conference Championship will be November 9-13 at Georgia Gwinnett College and is expanding to six teams after only four qualified last season.
Gonzalez led the Wildcats to three wins last season. Andrew Benitez took over as head coach in May. Most of last season's roster will return including leading scorers Takumi Ota and Habimana Janvier and team captains Juan Reyes and Rodrigo Rosales. Gonzalez and Benitez brought in several recruits to strengthen the roster.
