Men's Soccer wraps opening homestand against Texas Wesleyan
Wiley University men's soccer team hosts Texas Wesleyan University at 5 p.m. Thursday, concluding its season-opening homestand at Pemberton Field.
Live stats will be available. Fans can find the link in the men's soccer schedule on wileyathletics.com. The Wildcats aim to avoid opening with consecutive losses for the first time since 2017, when they beat Texas Wesleyan. Since the teams started playing each other in 2003, only three matches went Wiley's way. The schools competed against each other in the Red River Athletic Conference from 2002-05 and 2011-12. The Wildcats will look to snap a three-game losing streak against the Rams.
Wiley (0-1-0) is coming off a 2-1 season-opening loss to North American University. It gave up goals in the 53rd and 57th minutes before Stephen Gaskin got it on the board in the last 10 minutes of the game. Kevin Nievas, in his collegiate debut, stopped four of the six shots he faced. The Wildcats were outshot 17-11. Diego Rivas led the team with three shots.
Texas Wesleyan (2-0-0) opened the season with victories over North American University and Huston-Tillotson University. Louis Guffroy leads the Rams in scoring with three goals and an assist. Stefane Diogo follows with two goals and an assist. Fabricio Martinez and Rudy Gonzalez each have two assists. Axel Tonietto and Jesus Diaz have each made a start in the net. Tonietto made five saves in the victory over Huston-Tillotson.
Following this match, the Wildcats will play their first road match at Jarvis Christian University on September 3.
