Nievas, Hernandez take home HBCUAC Weekly Awards

Wiley University goalkeeper Kevin Nievas repeats as Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Defensive Player of the Week and Ian Hernandez claims Newcomer of the Week. They were honored for their performances between September 1 and 7, the conference announced on Monday.

 

Nievas picked up his second win and stopped a shot in the second half to preserve a 2-1 victory over Jarvis Christian University on Wednesday. He ranks second in the conference with a .692 save percentage.

 

Hernandez set up Aaron Castillo's game-winning goal with a great downfield pass. He has started all three games and joined the Wildcats after playing two seasons at Keiser University, helping it reach the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Men's Soccer National Championship twice.

 

Both athletes' performances helped the Wildcats get off to their best start since 2017. This is the fourth and fifth weekly award won by Wiley. Along with Defensive Player of the Week, Nievas won Freshman of the Week. Anthony Ulloa won Offensive Player of the Week.

 

The Wildcats visit Texas A&M University-Texarkana on Saturday.
