Distance, Field events shine for Men's Track and Field at Prairie View A&M Relays
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — The Wiley University men's track and field team tested itself against a mix of NCAA Division I and HBCU Athletic Conference programs Friday, securing several top-eight finishes at the Prairie View A&M University Relays.
Competing at the PVAMU Track and Field Complex, the Wildcats were led by a strong showing in the distance events and field transitions. Freshman John Russell Jr. and Dwight Bennett Jr. headlined the individual performances by taking two of the top three spots in the 5,000-meter run. Russell Jr. earned a second-place finish with a time of 17:46.99, while Bennett Jr. followed in third at 18:03.49.
In the 800-meter run, Wiley placed two runners in the top six. Junior Jaden Cole clocked a 2:00.85 to take fourth place, while fellow junior Jaylon Donson finished sixth with a time of 2:01.69.
The Wildcats also found success in the field events, particularly in the javelin throw. Freshman Myrian Blaze led the way with a fourth-place mark of 48.10 meters. Sophomore Caleb Benefield joined him in the top eight, securing seventh place with a throw of 38.70 meters.
In the jumping pits, freshman Caleb Sowell represented the Wildcats in the long jump, leaping 6.55 meters to claim sixth place overall.
On the track, Wiley's 4x400-meter relay team — comprised of Alex Williams, Armani Perry-Brown, Ryan Jackson Jr., and Julian McBride — battled to an eighth-place finish, crossing the line in 3:27.29.
The Wildcats will head to Texas State University's Bobcat Invitational from Thursday through Saturday.
