Russell claims HBCUAC Newcomer of the Week

Wiley University men's cross country athlete John Russell earns Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Men's Cross Country Newcomer of the Week after making his debut performance at Friday's John MacKenzie Invitational hosted by Texas Christian University.

Russell finished the five-kilometer course in 19:38, running at a 6:19 mile pace. He ran against National Collegiate Athletic Association and National Junior College Athletic Association athletes. Russell transferred to Wiley University from Ranger College. He ran in the NJCAA National Championship the previous two seasons.

The Wildcats head to the University of Texas at Tyler Season Opener on Saturday.
