Hard Work Pays Off! Men's Cross Country claims 2025 HBCUAC Championship

DANVILLE, Ala. - Hard work paid off for Wiley University men's cross country on Friday. Four runners finished in the top 15 as the Wildcats finished on top of the podium as the 2025 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Men's Cross Country Champions at Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center.

After three consecutive runner-up finishes, the Wildcats win their first HBCUAC title and second in program history. Their previous title came in 2014 when it was a member of the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC).

Javoun Goldsby led Wiley with a runner-up finish, recording a personal best 28:38.03. He earned All-HBCUAC for the fourth consecutive season and finished in the top two for the third consecutive season.

"It's unbelievable," Goldsby said. "It hurt last season when we weren't able to get the job done. I'm glad we were able to get this one."

Freshman Earl Hurd Jr. earned All-HBCUAC, finishing ninth at 30:00.34. Ameariun Harper (31:07.64) and Jaylon Donson (31:22.01) followed. Freshman Dwight Bennett Jr. completed the Wildcats' final tally of 55 points with a time of 31:57.54.

"Our freshmen have run great," Harper said. "We've set the standard and paved the way for them. I'm looking forward to seeing them run it back next season."

Voorhees University finished runner-up with 69 points. Tougaloo College and Talladega College followed with 86 and 91 points, respectively. Head coach Christopher McConnell was named 2025 HBCUAC Coach of the Year. He is the second Wiley head coach to win the honor, joining Micah Tirop, who earned the honor following the 2014 RRAC Championship.

The Wildcats will advance to the 2025 NAIA National Championship on November 21 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.
