Softball stumbles against University of Dallas

LONGVIEW, Texas - Early free passes caused Wiley University softball to fall behind early in a 9-1 run-rule loss. It wasn't able to maintain momentum after taking an early lead in a 8-4 Game 2 loss against the University of Dallas on Wednesday at Lear Park.

The doubleheader was relocated due to a water main break in Marshall. The Lady Wildcats extend their losing streak to three games and fall to 0-5 in home games.

GAME 1

Wiley (3-10, 3-6 HBCUAC) allowed four runs in the first inning. It allowed four batters to reach base via walk or hit by pitch. Two of them were with the bases loaded. Two singles brought home the other two runs. The Lady Wildcats answered with four hits. Alayna Parram singled with one out and advanced on a passed ball. Dyniste Lacy brought home Parram with a single. She took second on the throw  but was thrown out at third. Gwendolyn Johnson and Miranda Castaneda extended the inning with singles, but a strikeout ended it.

The Lady Wildcats got only two hits in the next five innings. After a shaky first inning, Serenity Smith settled in and threw three straight scoreless innings. She stranded runners in scoring position in the third and one on second in the fourth.
Dallas (3-12, 1-10 SCAC) scored four in the fifth on three hits. It added a run in the sixth on three hits to secure run-rule. Lacy and Johnson both went 2-for-3.

GAME 2

The Crusaders struck first with a run on two hits and a walk. Wiley answered. Parram led off with a single to the pitcher. She advanced on a groundball and a single by Lacy. Parram tied the game, scoring on a double steal. Castaneda put the Lady Wildcats ahead with a double to left-center and took third on a passed ball. A flyout and groundout ended the inning.

The momentum was short-lived. With two outs, a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. A walk brought home the tying run. A single and an error brought home two more runs, putting the Lady Wildcats in a 4-2 hole. Their offense was stymied as they didn't get a runner past second base in the next three innings.

An error in the fifth inning brought home two runs for the Crusaders. Smith got a run back with her first home run of the season. University of Dallas answered, scoring two runs on a triple and two singles.

Lacy went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Castaneda went 3-for-4. Sabriiyah Young went 2-for-3. Smith went six innings in her second consecutive start. Lacy pitched for the first time this season, holding the Crusaders scoreless in the seventh.
The Lady Wildcats will travel to Dillard University for a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference series on Saturday and Sunday.
