Softball falls against Grambling State
Playing against NCAA Division I and Southwestern Athletic Conference school Grambling State University, Wiley University softball made too many errors in a 13-3 run-rule loss. In the second game, they were unable to overcome walks in a 14-2 loss on Tuesday at Smith Park.
The Lady Wildcats (5-18, 5-10 HBCUAC) fall to 0-9 at home and 0-8 in nonconference games. They were run-ruled for the fourth straight game.
Wiley committed nine errors in the first game, which led to five runs. It allowed a run in the first three innings and two in the fourth. T'era Garrett led off with an infield single. Miranda Castaneda singled up the middle with one out. Ma'Kiya Miles brought both of them home with a triple to right-center field. She later scored on a throwing error to cut the margin to two.
The momentum was short-lived as two walks set up an eight-run inning for the Tigers, who subbed out nearly their entire starting lineup. Wiley was out-hit 14-5. Jazmine Rodriguez started in the circle. Only seven of the 13 runs she allowed were earned.
With Rodriguez the only healthy pitcher, Garrett, who usually plays in the outfield, started in the circle in Game 2. She struggled with command, walking six batters and hitting one batter. After facing 13 batters, Lacy moved to the circle from shortstop and pitched the rest of the game. The Lady Wildcats trailed by eight when they made the final out.
Alayna Parram led off with an infield single to shortstop. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a throwing error. Miles drove in her third run of the afternoon with a double in the third inning. The Lady Wildcats were outhit 9-6.
They will continue their homestand this weekend with a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference series against Huston-Tillotson University.
