Softball resumes HBCUAC play at Huston-Tillotson University

Wiley University softball returns to Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference play with a home series against Huston-Tillotson University on Saturday and Sunday at Smith Park.

 

Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. and Sunday's finale at 11 a.m. The Lady Wildcats host their second HBCUAC series. They hosted Stillman College on March 7 and 8. Seniors Alayna Parram and Dajah Montgomery will be honored in between games on Saturday.

 

Wiley (5-18, 5-10 HBCUAC) is looking for its first home victory since the program's rebirth and ending a five-game losing streak. It is sixth in the conference standings and currently one game behind Oakwood University and Voorhees University for fourth place. The Lady Wildcats are looking for their third series victory.

 

In Tuesday's doubleheader against Grambling State, Ma'Kiya Miles went 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI. She hit a double and a triple as she took the team lead in batting average at .382. Miles leads the HBCUAC in triples with four. Jazmine Rodriguez threw her sixth complete game in the first game against Grambling. T'era Garrett scored two runs and recorded a hit.

 

Huston-Tillotson (10-21, 10-5 HBCUAC) returns to the field for the first time since playing at Stillman College on March 28-29. It sits in third after getting swept by the Tigers. Alayali Alaniz leads the Lady Rams with a .374 batting average, 23 RBI and 22 runs. Alexis Gaona follows, hitting .346 with 21 runs and nine RBI. Kieana Cruz is batting .345 with 19 RBI and 16 runs.

 

In the circle, Alexis Tamez is 6-8 with a 4.97 ERA. She has struck out 66 batters in 88 2/3 innings and thrown 14 complete games with three shutouts. Marleigh Robinson is 4-8 with a 7.85 ERA. Huston-Tillotson is looking to lock up a top three seed for the upcoming HBCUAC Softball Championship.
