Softball wins First Home Game

Wiley University infielder Dajah Montgomery hit a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the fifth as the Lady Wildcats held off Huston-Tillotson University for an 8-7 victory in the series opener Saturday at Smith Park.

The Lady Wildcats (6-19, 6-11 HBCUAC) win their first home game since the program's rebirth. They snapped a four-game losing streak and a nine-game home losing streak. It's the third time they've claimed the series opener.

Wiley fell behind after allowing a run in the second and third innings. Alayna Parram was hit by a pitch to lead off the third. T'era Garrett followed with a bunt single to the pitcher. A sacrifice bunt by Dyniste Lacy moved them into scoring position. Miranda Castaneda tied the game with a double to the left-center field gap. Sariya Calhoun gave the Lady Wildcats their first lead with a double down the left field line.

The lead held up until Huston-Tillotson scored three runs in the fifth on four hits and a wild pitch. Wiley answered. Castaneda led off with a walk and Adriauna Coleman reached on an error. Ma'Kiya Miles hit a double to the fence, which brought both runners home and tied the game at five. A passed ball moved Miles to third, allowing her to come home on Montgomery's single to right-center. Jazmine Rodriguez and Parram singled to load the bases. Garrett hit the ball over the shortstop's head to extend the lead.

Two errors helped the Rams trim the margin to one. Rodriguez got a groundout to end the sixth and retired Huston-Tillotson in order in the seventh, sealing the win. She threw her seventh complete game and earned her fourth victory.

Parram went 3-for-3 with a run. Garrett was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Miles went 2-for-4. The Lady Wildcats out-hit the Rams 11-8.

Wiley fell 15-2 in the second game. Six walks and seven hits allowed the Rams to put up 11 in the first inning. Fourteen batters came to the plate. The inning ended when a runner on second left early. The Lady Wildcats scored two in the second inning. Parram hit a two-RBI double through the right side, which scored Montgomery and Calhoun, who singled.

Huston-Tillotson added three runs in the third and one in the fourth, which invoked the run-rule after the fifth inning. Lacy made her sixth appearance and fourth start in the circle. She threw her first complete game.

The series concludes at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
