Softball drops finale against Huston-Tillotson

MARSHALL, Texas — The Wiley University softball team dropped its series finale to Huston-Tillotson University 11-1 in a five-inning contest Sunday at Smith Park.

The Rams (12-22, 12-6 RRAC) utilized a five-run third inning and a four-run fifth to secure the run-rule victory. Wiley fell to 6-20 overall and 6-12 in Red River Athletic Conference play with the loss.

Huston-Tillotson jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Kieana Cruz hit a two-run double to left field. The Rams broke the game open in the third, scoring five unearned runs aided by three Wiley errors. During that stretch, Madison Stimpson hit a two-run double and Aliyah Resendiz followed with a two-run, inside-the-park home run to right field.

The Lady Wildcats recorded their lone run in the fourth inning. T'era Garrett led off with a triple down the right-field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ma'Kiya Miles.

The Rams added four more runs in the top of the fifth through RBI singles from Alexis Gaona and Alayali Alaniz, a fielder's choice by Isabella Roblero, and a grounded RBI by Alexis Tamez

Marleigh Robinson earned the win for Huston-Tillotson, allowing only one hit and one run over five innings. Jazmine Rodriguez took the loss for Wiley, surrendering 10 hits and six earned runs while striking out three in a complete-game effort.

The Lady Wildcats close the regular season with a three-game series against Oakwood University at Airport Park on April 18-19.
