Playing in an Alumni Gymnasium packed with alumni and supporters for the 2024 Homecoming celebration, The Wiley University women's basketball team could not feed off the vibrant energy in an 84-53 loss to Texas Wesleyan University on Saturday.
It's the first time the Lady Wildcats fell on Homecoming since 2021. They were outshot 44.6 to 27.1 percent. Once again, Wiley struggled to possess the ball with 31 turnovers and 19 coming off steals.
Kewaysha Alsup led the team with 12 points and nine rebounds. Mary Leday followed with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists. Tamia Dolls also reached double-digits with 10 points, adding three rebounds and two steals. Celebria Peacock led the team in assists with four while contributing eight points. Jessica Nerestant provided seven points, nine rebounds and two steals.
Wiley (0-2) struck first in the first quarter on a three-pointer by Alsup. It turned the ball over eight times and was held scoreless for eight minutes. Three-pointers by Dolls and Leday pulled the Lady Wildcats within one and entered the second quarter trailing 12-11.
Nerestant gave the lead back to Wiley with a layup. It could not build on it as it shot 3-for-16 the rest of the quarter and turned the ball over 10 times. Texas Wesleyan took advantage of the offensive struggles and built a 14-point halftime lead.
The Lady Wildcats didn't score in the first four minutes of the third quarter. They shot five-for-17 while allowing Texas Wesleyan to hit 10 of 19 shots. The margin grew above 20 which proved to be insurmountable.
Wiley will head to Austin, Texas, on Friday to play Huston-Tillotson University on November 9 in the 2024 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Classic at the Austin Convention Center.
