Women's Basketball unable to stop Paul Quinn
DALLAS - Wiley University women's basketball players Moriah Burley and Alexis Foster scored in double figures but the Lady Wildcats were unable to finish off Paul Quinn College in a 73-64 loss in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference game Thursday at the Tiger Den.
The loss snaps a season-high six-game winning streak and a four-game conference winning streak for the Lady Wildcats. They lost on the road for the first time this season. It's the third time they've allowed a team to come back in the fourth quarter since DeWitt Mandley became head coach in 2023.
Burley led the Lady Wildcats with 14 points. She hit five shots, including four 3-pointers and added six rebounds. Foster followed with 12 points on four shots. She contributed defensively with four steals. Wiley was held in check offensively, only hitting 23 of 81 shots, including 9-for-32 from 3-point territory.
Kendall Campbell hit two 3-pointers and Burley got a steal and layup to put Wiley ahead 53-44 with a minute remaining in the third quarter. It only made one field goal in the next eight minutes, which allowed Paul Quinn to go on a 22-3 run. Burley hit a 3-pointer and Foster got a steal and layup to trim the margin to five with 2:06 remaining. The Lady Wildcats only made one field goal.
They led 35-34 at halftime. Burley hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter and Campbell made a second-chance bucket, to give the Lady Wildcats a 32-24 lead with 4:19 remaining. They missed five shots, allowing the Lady Tigers to take the lead with a 10-1 run. Foster hit a jumper with seconds remaining to give Wiley the lead.
The Lady Wildcats head to Austin to face Huston-Tillotson University at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rams lost 70-49 to Philander Smith, falling to 0-5 in HBCUAC play.
