Second half surge carries Women's Soccer past Jarvis Christian

HAWKINS, Texas - Wiley University defender Yajaira Hernandez broke a first-half tie with her first goal of the season. Her teammates Yamilett Umana and Nadia Hernandez provided insurance goals in a 4-1 victory over Jarvis Christian University on Wednesday at Wendon L. Blair Field.

The Lady Wildcats (2-0-0) open with consecutive wins for the first time since 2016. They match last season's win total and improve to 6-0 against their Highway 80 rival.
Wiley struck first. Solid passing set up Deyanara Hernandez, who took the ball to the net and put it in for her first of the season in the fourth minute. A defensive breakdown allowed Jarvis to tie the match in the 20th minute. The Lady Wildcats had three corner kicks but were unable to convert. Three of Jarvis' five shots were on goal.

In the 66th minute, Carissa Escamilla kicked the ball downfield and connected with Yajaira, who put Wiley back in front. Four minutes later, Umana netted her second goal of the season, which increased the lead to two. Nadia Hernandez's second goal of the season in the 82nd minute pushed the advantage to three. Wiley outshot the Lady Bulldogs 8-2 in the second half and 12-7 overall. Deyanara and Yajaira each took three shots.

Mariana Quijano picked up her second victory and stopped two more shots in the second half. The match was physical as both teams were issued two yellow cards.

The Lady Wildcats will visit Centenary College of Louisiana on Friday and return to Shreveport on Saturday to face Huntingdon College.
