Volleyball falls to Dillard in season opener

Five Wiley University volleyball players made their collegiate debut as the Lady Wildcats fell in three sets to Dillard University in their season-opening match Thursday at Alumni Gymnasium.

Rachelle Santos led the team with five kills. Madison Guinyard recorded five digs and a service ace. Madisyn Moore tallied two solo blocks, two kills and four digs. Erin Ferguson notched a dig in two sets. Lealani Monsegue posted two digs, an ace and a kill.

Wiley was out-hit .212-(-).072 and 30-17 in kills. It made 23 attacking errors with six off Dillard blocks. The Lady Wildcats struggled serving with four aces and 11 errors.

Rejinah Hickman recorded a kill and a service ace and Jae Jemott and Santos teamed up for a block to put Wiley ahead 5-2 in the first set. Dillard got four kills and an ace to take a seven-point lead. The Lady Wildcats were unable to recover.

Three errors by the Lady Bleu Devils and kills from Monsegue, Shyla Starks and Moore gave Wiley an 11-7 lead in the second set. Two service and three attack errors allowed Dillard to grab a 15-12 lead. Wiley only scored twice as the Lady Bleu Devils ended the set on a six-point run. The Lady Wildcats fell behind by six and could not mount a comeback in the third set.

They will start the Wiley University Showdown at noon tomorrow against St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and play an exhibition match against John Melvin University.
