Volleyball concludes Wiley University Showdown

The Wiley University volleyball team fell in three sets against Paul Quinn College (25-15, 25-10, 25-17) and Louisiana Christian University (25-11, 25-13, 25-20) to finish the Wiley University Showdown Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

Jae Jemmott led the Lady Wildcats with seven kills against Paul Quinn. Madisyn Moore followed with four. Lynnetra Taylor started as setter and put up 15 assists. Nadia Cortez had three service aces. Moore led the team with four digs.

Rachelle Santos led Wiley with nine kills against Louisiana Christian. Shyla Starks and Jemmott followed with six. Leah Monsegue played setter in the last two sets and led the team with 11 assists. Morgan Sellers started and recorded five. T'aja Hardy led the team with nine digs.

The Lady Wildcats could not slow Paul Quinn's attack, allowing 37 kills and only benefiting from 10 errors. They scored 21 kills but made 20 attacking errors. In serving, the Lady Wildcats were outscored 16-7. Wiley led early in the first two sets but could not hold momentum.

Louisiana Christian (6-6, 0-0 RRAC) outhit Wiley .297 to .095 and outscored 42-24 in kills. The Lady Wildcats struggled to handle serves, giving up 11 aces. In the first set, they made three errors and allowed four kills, which let Louisiana Christian build a nine-point advantage it did not relinquish.

Wiley trailed the entire second set. It gave up 14 kills and only recorded six. Kills from Monsegue and Starks gave the Lady Wildcats a two-point lead in the third set. Two attack errors and a receiving error put Wiley behind by three. It regained the lead - taking advantage of three attack errors. It didn't last, as the Lady Wildcats allowed three kills and made two attacking errors, which put them behind by three.

On Sunday, the Lady Wildcats will resume Historically Black College and Universities Athletic Conference play against Tougaloo College at 1 p.m.
