Volleyball falls against Philander Smith

The Wiley University volleyball team held leads in the first and third sets. Still, it could not finish them in a three-set loss against Philander Smith University (25-18, 25-11, 25-16) Thursday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Lady Wildcats (0-6, 0-3 HBCUAC) were out-hit .215 to -.106 and outscored 28-20 in kills. They made 35 attacking errors with seven off of blocks. Nadia Cortez recorded a kill and three service aces to give Wiley an 8-4 lead in the first set. Eight errors shifted the momentum to Philander Smith, who went on a 12-point run.

Wiley fell behind early in Set 2. A kill from Shyla Starks and two service aces from Jae Jemmott tied the set. Five attacking and two receiving errors led to an eight-point run for the Lady Panthers. Kills by Jemmott and Starks gave the Lady Wildcats an early lead in the third set. Errors at critical points allowed Philander Smith to take control.

Jae Jemmott led the team with six kills, three service aces and two blocks. Cortez followed with four kills and three service aces. Starks contributed four kills. Maria Luiza Chaves posted 13 assists. Maria Guinyard tallied 14 digs.

The Lady Wildcats will wrap up their 2024 home schedule against Southern University at New Orleans at 1 p.m. Saturday. Seniors Fatima Ortega and Annie Narvaez will be honored before the match. The Lady Knights are searching for their first victory after being swept by Dillard on Tuesday.
