Ortega, Hickman earn NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete

Wiley University volleyball athletes Fatima Ortega and Rejinah Hickman earned recognition for their exceptional academic performance while competing in their sport, as they were named National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Daktronics Scholar-Athletes on Monday.

The pair were selected by holding a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average or higher, appearing on a signed eligibility certificate and attending the institution for at least a full year. They were two of 1,328 athletes nationwide that were selected.

Ortega completed her fourth and final season with the program. This is the third time she's earned the honor. She is also a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar and three-time honor roll recipient with the Red River Athletic Conference in 2021-22 and the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, which was rebranded to the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference in July, in 2022-23 and 2023-24. Ortega is expected to graduate in May.

This is the first year Hickman has been eligible for the award, after completing her sophomore season. Both players helped the Lady Wildcats to three victories.
