Volleyball falls in four sets at Centenary
SHREVEPORT, La. - Playing their second match in 18 hours, the Wiley University volleyball team bounced back from a first-set loss but was unable to overcome Centenary College of Louisiana in a four-set defeat (25-11, 21-25, 25-9, 25-18) Saturday at the Gold Dome.
Rachelle Santos led the team with nine kills. Jae Jemmott followed with seven kills and a team-high four blocks. Maria Luiza Chaves led the team with 13 assists and contributed eight digs and four kills. Madison Herrera followed with 10 assists. For the second straight match, Nadia Cortez led the team with 18 digs and four service aces.
Transfer Asia Griffiths made her Wildcat debut, contributing seven digs. Erin Ferguson got her first action of the season, playing in the third set.
How it Happened
- Wiley was held to three kills on 24 attempts in the first set. Centenary went on a 10-point run and didn't look back. The Lady Wildcats allowed 13 kills on 26 attempts and 10 service aces.
- The Lady Wildcats bounced back in the second set. Trailing 11-6, Cortez got two aces to trim the margin to two. Kills by Johna Davis, Santos and Jemmott put Wiley ahead by three. Centenary took advantage of two attack errors and tied the set at 17. Jemmott got a kill and a block to give Wiley a two-point lead. Kills by Cortez and Shyla Starks and a service error sealed the set and evened the match.
- Wiley was unable to stop Centenary in the third set. It allowed 10 kills and only put down five. The Lady Wildcats struck first on an ace by Chaves and a kill by Starks. Three attacking and two service errors allowed the Ladies to take a six-point lead. Centenary closed the set with a six-point run.
- A service ace by Santos gave the Lady Wildcats a 12-9 lead, but the Ladies tied it with two kills and an ace. Kills by Jemmott and Davis put Wiley in front by two. Three attacking errors allowed Centenary to take control of the set with a seven-point run.
UP NEXT: The Lady Wildcats will travel to Tyler Junior College for a scrimmage on Thursday. They will visit Jarvis Christian University on September 10.
