Volleyball unable to overcome Dillard

NEW ORLEANS - Wiley University volleyball fresh off a thrilling Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) victory, could not match the defending HBCUAC tournament champion Dillard University's attack in a three-set loss (25-15, 25-12, 25-18) Saturday at Dent Hall.
 
The Lady Wildcats (2-3, 1-1 HBCUAC) were outhit .271 to .035 and outscored 39-21 in kills. Six of their attacks were turned away by Dillard blocks. Wiley blocked three of Dillard's attacks. It was outdone on the serve with one ace and 10 errors, while the Lady Bleu Devils put down six aces and made seven errors.
 
For the third consecutive match, Shyla Starks led the attack with eight kills. Jae Jemmott followed with seven. Leah Monsegue recorded 16 assists. Nadia Cortez led the team with nine digs. Kerrigan Biggs recorded a solo block and a block assist. Sabriiyah Young tallied two block assists.
 
How it Happened:
  • The Lady Wildcats only recorded three kills while allowing Dillard 15 in the opening set. Wiley trailed by six, but three errors by the Lady Bleu Devils helped them pull within three. Dillard got two kills and an attack error by Wiley and pushed the margin to seven.
  • Wiley again struggled hitting in the second set, with seven kills and nine attack errors. Dillard built a six-point lead. The Lady Wildcats pulled within three on two errors and a kill by Starks. The Lady Bleu Devils put the set away with an eight-point run.
  • Kills by Starks and Biggs gave Wiley an early lead in the third set. Dillard responded with four kills and took a four-point advantage. A kill by Starks and ace by Monsegue pulled the Lady Wildcats within two. The Lady Bleu Devils scored seven of the next eight points. Kills by Jemmott, Johna Davis and Cortez cut the margin to three. The Lady Wildcats made three errors, which sealed the match for the Lady Bleu Devils.
