Volleyball finishes 2025 season
Wiley University volleyball concluded the 2025 season by honoring its seniors. It fell in three sets to Philander Smith University (25-18, 25-16, 25-15), Thursday at Alumni Gymnasium.
Student trainer Keomani Shane (2024-25), Asia Griffiths (2025), Kerrigan Biggs (2025), Annie Narvaez (2024-25), Johna Davis (2023-25) and manager Angel Lovings (2022-25) were honored before the match. In their four seasons, they played for four different head coaches and won 23 matches.
Griffiths recorded 10 digs. Biggs tallied two kills and a team-high two block assists. Narvaez posted three kills, five digs and a block assist. Davis put up two kills.
The Lady Wildcats (3-13, 2-10 HBCUAC) were outscored 36-28 and outhit .214 to (-).016. Shyla Starks led the attack with 12 kills. Jae Jemmott followed with eight. Maria Luiza de Chaves and Madison Herrera split time at setter, recording 14 and 12 assists, respectively. Marai Guinyard led the team with 17 digs.
How it happened
- Wiley trailed by three early but took the lead on a kill by Starks and two attack errors by Philander Smith.
- Philander Smith got two kills and took advantage of two attack errors by the Lady Wildcats to open up a five-point lead. Wiley wasn't able to recover.
- The Lady Wildcats opened the second set with five straight points on kills by Biggs, Starks, Narvaez and Griffiths. Philander Smith answered with four kills and a service ace.
- The Lady Panthers went on a 9-point run with four kills and three attack errors by the Lady Wildcats to open a 14-6 advantage. Wiley was only able to pull within five.
- Philander Smith controlled the final set jumping out to a 13-2 lead.
UP NEXT: The Lady Wildcats miss the postseason for the second straight season. The next few months will be pivotal for the Wildcats. While the search for a permanent head coach introduces uncertainty, it also presents a unique opportunity for a fresh start and a renewed vision. With 15 players eligible to return for the 2026 season, the foundation of a competitive roster is there. The returning athletes will be looking to their new leader to set the tone, build on their existing talents, and guide them into the next chapter of Wiley University volleyball. Though the path ahead is unclear, the dedication of the players and the University's commitment suggest that the future, while undetermined, is ripe with potential for the Wildcats.
