TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Wiley University men's basketball's 2025-26 season came to a close with a 79-66 loss to East No. 6 seed Oakwood University in the opening round of the 2026 Hope Credit Union Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Basketball Championship Tuesday at Stillman College's Birthright Alumni Hall.
The Wildcats (1-21) enter 2026-27 seeking their first victory since October 25. It's the second time in the last three seasons that they lost their first tournament game.
Wiley held a 35-34 halftime lead. It trailed by as many as six in the first half. Cortez Collins blocked a shot with 9:55 left and set up a 3-pointer for Raymond Guillory. LaRonte Henry made a layup to put the Wildcats in front. The lead changed hands nine times. Dontae Stringfellow hit a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left that gave the Wildcats a lead they would take into the locker room.
In the second half, the Wildcats had a cold spell that has plagued them in several games this season. They only made one field goal in the first 7:28, which allowed the Ambassadors to go on an 18-4 run and take a 13-point lead. Wiley didn't get closer than nine points.
The margin grew to 21 with 6:26 left. Stringfellow hit two 3-pointers and a layup, which narrowed the deficit. The Wildcats were slightly outshot 44.4 to 40.4 percent, but held the edge in 3-point shooting with seven to three for the Ambassadors. Twenty-six turnovers hurt Wiley. Oakwood scored 23 points off the turnovers. Only five of the 16 turnovers forced by the Wildcats came off steals.
Shamir Mosley led the Wildcats with 18 points in his final game. He hit six shots with one from 3-point territory. Collins led the team defensively with 11 rebounds and five blocks to go along with six points. He finished his career with the second-most blocks in program history, dating back to 2006. Stringfellow, who saw limited action most of the season, had his most productive outing with 13 points.
Brayden Bradshaw, Zahyem Bradwell, Collins and Mosley completed their playing careers. Head coach Joseph Flegler will evaluate the roster and look to bring in recruits that will strengthen the roster and help return the Wildcats to being contenders at the conference and national levels.
