Men's Soccer drops opener against North American
A late rally fell just short for the Wiley University men's soccer team as it lost its season opener 2-1 to North American University at Pemberton Field. Despite a goal from sophomore striker Stephen Gaskin in the final ten minutes, it wasn't enough to overcome a two-goal deficit.
This marks the fourth consecutive season the Wildcats have started with a loss. The team was outshot 17-11 overall and 6-5 in shots on goal. Diego Rivas led Wiley with three shots, while Aaron Castillo, Alvaro Guerrero, Christopher Haeger, and Daniel Sanchez each had a shot on goal.
The first half was scoreless, with Wiley's goalkeeper Kevin Nievas making two key saves in his first career start. The Stallions broke the tie in the 54th minute and scored again just four minutes later. The Wildcats responded in the 81st minute when Gaskin stole the ball and fired it into the right corner of the net for his first goal of the season. The Wildcats had a chance to tie it up, but Haeger's shot was saved by North American's goalkeeper, Sofiene Hammami. Nievas finished the game with four saves.
The match was a physical one, with 22 fouls and six yellow cards issued. The Wildcats will look to bounce back on Thursday against Texas Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
