Wiley University women's basketball pulled away in the second half of a 93-62 victory over the College of Biblical Studies on Wednesday at the Fonde Recreation Center in Houston. It struggled in an 83-46 loss against No. 10 Langston University on Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats (3-2) move to 2-0 on the road and 1-2 at home.
WEDNESDAY
Wiley trailed 32-28 with 4:27 left in the second quarter. Layups by Daviunia Jones and Cailan Hale tied the game. Hale gave Wiley the lead with a layup. She stole the ball and set up Kelechi Dike for a layup to increase the lead to four. The Lady Wildcats held a 40-34 lead at halftime.
Three-pointers by Brandy Jones and Keimora Banks gave the Lady Wildcats a 12-point lead. Moriah Burley and Shayda Fletcher hit threes to increase the margin to 21. Wiley didn't allow the Ambassadors to hit a field goal in the last eight minutes of the quarter. It forced seven turnovers with five on steals. It led by 24 entering the fourth.
Dike led all scorers with 20 points, adding nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jones recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hale recorded 10 points and four rebounds. Alexis Foster tallied 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
SATURDAY
The Lady Wildcats could not match Langston's athleticism. They turned the ball over 29 times, leading to 33 points for Langston. Wiley only hit 23.9 percent of its shots while allowing its opponent to make 43.5 percent. It was out-rebounded 48-34.
Moriah Burley hit a layup and one which gave the Lady Wildcats their only lead midway through the first quarter. Three turnovers helped Langston gain a nine-point first quarter lead.
Two 3-pointers increased the margin to 15. Burley hit two threes to close the gap to nine. The Lady Wildcats did not hit another field goal in the last seven minutes of the quarter and trailed 46-21 at halftime.
Wiley was unable to rally. While it played even in the third quarter, it was out scored 23-11 in the fourth. Burley led the team with 14 points. Jessica Nerestant followed with nine and contributed four rebounds. Foster provided eight points and three assists.
The Lady Wildcats will open Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference play on Saturday against Tougaloo College.
